Journal Entry: March 23
It really is a miracle.
Things seemed to be getting worse and worse -- my case was getting stretched thinner and thinner, and our one chance of getting Maya out disappeared. Every time a light appeared at the end of the tunnel, the tunnel got longer. I was nearly forced to choose between Maya's life and justice...
And then she appeared. Franziska. Bullet in the shoulder be damned, she arrived, carrying with her various important pieces of evidence. And yet even with that arrival, it seemed like we were almost out of luck. The Judge demanded that I choose one piece of evidence only, and one peron to present it to, and after that the trial would be over.
And somehow, we managed to craft our own miracle from that.
Engarde's in jail now, where he belongs. De Killer is out there somewhere, but I suppose it's to be expected considering he comes from a long line of assassins. Adrian Andrews is free, in more ways than one. And Maya... oh thank God, Maya is back, alive, safe, and starving. (I had to pay the bill for the starving part, of course. How do I always get stuck with this stuff?)
I think I finally get it now. I can save people with my job, true. But in the end, as important as it is to defend the innocent, the truth comes first. Without the truth, more innocent people can be hurt, and it's up to me to help find it.
No, not me, "Us."
The defense and the prosecutor... we work against each other, and with each other. In the ideal situation, we test our wits against each other, wittleing the situation down until only one truth remains. THAT'S how we save people -- not by keeping perfect records, but by exposing the crime for what it really is.
I'm going to be a little less picky about my clients, I think. I will continue to attest to their innocence, of course; if I don't, there's no way I can work to my fullest potential. But I won't fear the truth anymore either. If they're guilty, the only way to confirm for certain is to dig until we find the core of the issue. And I owe it not just to my client, but to everybody involved to defend my client to the bitter end.
It's... reassurring, somehow. Like I finally understand everything. Thank you, Edgeworth.

I was only doing my job.
I'm just.. relieved.. that Maya was returned safely.

Believe me, I am too. It's great to finally have all this over with, and the best possible conclusion reached.

I owe you my thanks, as well.
