RP POST: Touching bases ((Locked to Maya))

He's been really bad about this, so he figures he'd best get this done. One on one, in this case.

Maya's really the one person he should be talking to more, so it's odd he hasn't really been able to have a good chat with her lately. Which is why he's asked to meet her at their favorite burger joint. It's really high time he caught up and checked on how she's doing. And, well, he needs to fill her in on a few OTHER things.

He waits for her outside.

"I know. But, even with the channeling last week, I didn't really do anything... it's still up to everybody else to go catch them. Guess that's the way it is, but..."

She grinned, rolling up her sleeves as best she could. "Alright! What are we gonna do, huh?"

Phoenix shakes his head. "From what I heard, you were really brave that day. And you probably helped everybody out a lot. You shouldn't sell yourself short. Frankly, I just wish I was there to see it." He smiles faintly.

He hurks. Oh. Oh hell. "Um..." Oh geez. And after that conversation too, how the hell is he going to tell her that he doesn't want her coming? That it could be dangerous?

He stalls, perhaps a bit too long. Silly Phoenix.

"Well, alright." She grinned. "As long as they find the guy. That place is way too dangerous with him on the loose."

...Maya frowns. "We do have a plan, right?"

"Definitely." [And scary as the dickens,] he adds to himself.

Phoenix... looks guilty. "Maya, this... could be really dangerous. I'm not sure if..." He takes a deep breath. "I want to see you safe, Maya. And, well, the fewer people who do this, the better. I'm... I'm sorry."

He feels miserable. So when the food comes, he doesn't have much of an appetite.

"Here's hoping, then!" More grinning.

And then it faded. "But... the more people who do this, the better chance Sis has, right? I can do this without getting in the way, Nick! Really."

Maya ignores it. Something is really wrong here.

Phoenix winces. "It's not about you getting in the way, Maya, it's just..." He takes a breath, trying to figure out how best to phrase this.

"Maya... when you were kidnapped that one time, I felt like the whole world had given way beneath my feet. All I knew is that I didn't want you to be in that sort of danger again, ever," he begins. "You know how ruthless Redd White is. And our plan... well, I want to be sure it goes right, but if it doesn't, we could all be in a lot of danger. And I just... I don't want to see you get hurt." He drums his fingers, feeling like a hypocrite. Isn't this exactly what Mia had done to him? But he knew it was for the best.

"Just... please. Wish us luck. We'll save her this time, I swear. And then... then I swear I'll let you help more. But please, just this once..."

He knows he's doing the right thing, but he still feels like a total schmoe.

She frowned, staring at her food and kicking her heels together. "Alright, alright, just... promise me you won't anything happen to Sis, alright? Please... And don't let anything happen to you, either..."

Phoenix blinks, then nods. "All right. I promise I'll do everything in my power to make sure your sister and I are okay. Believe me, I want things to go well just as much as you do."

He sags a bit in relief. He was worried she would get really upset over this.
