RP POST: The Perils of Personal Ads

He doesn't want to take the responses, but he knows they're coming.

Well, he thinks he knows. Maybe he'll get lucky and nobody will respond at all. But Phoenix somehow doubts he's that lucky, to be honest. With his luck it's going to be some crazy person with a gun, or who is an assassin in their home dimension, or thinks the color green is really funny. Or who jumps straight to sex. That seems to be common in the Nexus.

He sits in his office, tapping his fingers nervously. Phew. He wishes he could find whoever posted that thing.

Phoenix blinks. Hasn't had a call in a while... maybe a client? Or...

He sighs. Probably more personal ad stuff. He'll be amazed if he gets ANYTHING done today. Still, he answers the phone.

"Wright and Co. Law Offices, can I help you?"

...?!

"Oh, God, I'm sorry. This was included in a Nexus ad and I thought it was your personal number. I'm really sorry to waste your time like this."

Phoenix sighs. "No no, don't hang up. It's my cell number. It's just... ah, never mind. You saw the ad too, huh? Wish I could figure out who actually put that up," he says. Actually, he knows EXACTLY who did it. Damnit, Maya.

"Still, I'm really sorry. I'll call back at a more convenient time, if that's okay with you?" She is not obstructing the law for the sake of a personal ad. "My name's Carol, by the way- Carol Trainer."

He rubs the back of his head. "If it makes you feel any better, it's not like I've had much business going through anyway. But if you'd like, you can call, um, later this evening? Or I'm in the Sanctuary sometimes, if you have any idea where that is." Carol Trainer. Odd, where's he heard that name before? Ah well.

"I do, but I don't really like the place. Too crazy for me."

"I'll call later in the evening. Hey, maybe we can meet up in the main Nexus? That tends to be safer?"

Phoenix nods. "Okay then. Give me a holler then, and I'll meet up with you. You'll probably be able to recognize me; most people notice the hair first." He rolls his eyes.

"Oh, I've got... uh. I'll wear a necklace of big red beads."

"Gotcha. See you soon, then."

Carol waits in the open, a bit later!

She is indeed wearing them beads.

And he's got the hair. It's very spikey hair. Not necessarily as ridiculously so as some people CLAIM, but oh well.

He spots the beads. "You... must be Carol, then? I'm Phoenix. It's a pleasure to meet you." He holds a hand out.

She takes and shakes, firm but not too firm, enthusiastic but not too enthusiastic. Confident.

"Cool! You too, Phoenix."

He's familiar with the shake. It's the shake Mia used to have. Or has, if you consider her alternate. "So what kind of world do you come from? I'll warn you, chances are better than not yours is more entertaining than mine," he says, grinning.

"The kind where all the sci-fi's in the new and terrible drugs on the street," she sighs. "I'm a cop. Nothing I see's very entertaining, I'm afraid."

He rubs the back of his neck. "Must be tough. I have to work with the cops every now and then, and they always seem to be under a lot of pressure to catch the guy responsible for whatever," he says. [Which adds to a lot of mistakes,] he adds mentally, but doesn't say aloud.

He shrugs. "I'm afraid mine's pretty mundane, aside from a bit of ESP and spirit channeling here and there. You can imagine how much the Nexus has been blowing my mind." He chuckles a little nervously.

"What, they're not just... Doing their jobs?"

"ESP? Spirit channelling?" She brightens up. "Awesome! We never have anything that interesting at home! What I wouldn't do to speak to dead people. Any dead people, not just, you know."

He sighs. "They are, but unfortunately their job involves listening to their superiors as much as the footwork, and the superiors tend to push for results. So I've gathered, anyway. Being in defense, I don't have as much personal experience as the prosecution." He shrugs. "I have a friend who's a cop. Nice guy, but a bit dim. He seems to take the brunt of responsibility when things go wrong, I feel a little sorry for him."

Phoenix blinks. "You don't have anything like that, huh? It's not widely advertised, but we've got it. There's one school in particular where you channel and actually become the person you channel, which is a little disorienting if you actually see it," he says. Which doesn't mean it's unwelcome, necessarily, considering that until he'd arrived in the Nexus it was the only way he could see Mia again.

"Nothing like our system, that..." What? Defence doesn't know as much as the Prosecution? WHAT?

"A little, you say?"

"Well, it's more like the prosecution can interact officially with the police, and the defense kind of has to grab the scraps sometimes." He sighs. "It's hard being the one who has to defend the 'bad guy'."

"Okay, a lot, if you're not used to it." He shrugs. "I sort of am. Work with a spirit medium, actually. It's pretty interesting."

"That's... I'm sorry, but that's really weird."

"Oh? You do a lot of murder cases?"

"Huh. Wish things weren't weird for you, then." He chuckles nervously. Oh dear. Um.

He nods. "Yeah, though she's not used for that. She's a legal aide, actually. Long story. But yeah, I'm a criminal defense attorney."

"Legal aide? She channels dead lawyers to advise you?"

"Er, no, she's just a legal aide. That's all." Well okay, she summons ONE dead lawyer. But that's only under duress, and at any rate he's not about to mention that on a first meetin.
